Weaving Digital Skills Training Through Money Guidance
In today’s digital world, access to technology is essential for financial wellbeing, job opportunities, and overall quality of life. Yet, many people on low incomes face barriers to digital inclusion, such as a lack of devices, internet access, or the skills needed to navigate online platforms. At Clean Slate, we recognise this digital divide and are committed to supporting individuals in becoming digitally included, empowering them to make the most of digital tools and resources, ultimately to become better-off.
By providing access to free devices and data, offering one-to-one support, and running workshops that enhance digital skills through guided use of our online financial wellbeing toolkit and resources, we ensure that people are better equipped to manage their finances and improve their employability. Here’s a closer look at how Clean Slate helps people on low incomes make full use of digital technology to enhance their financial wellbeing and overall quality of life.
- Access to Devices and Data
For individuals struggling financially, getting a smartphone, tablet, or even basic internet access can be out of reach. Clean Slate works with partner organisations, like the Good Things Foundation, to provide free devices and data to those who need them. This support is crucial, it enables people to get online, connect with essential services, and take advantage of opportunities that may otherwise be inaccessible.
Whether it’s setting up online banking, applying for jobs, or staying connected with friends and family, having access to a device and internet is often the first step towards improved financial health. Clean Slate ensures that clients not only receive these tools but also understand how to use them effectively to enhance their day-to-day lives.
- Digital Skills Support
Having a device is only the beginning. Clean Slate offers tailored digital skills support to help individuals build the confidence and know-how to use their devices to the fullest. With the use of digital tools peppered through all of our programmes, clients learn and practise everything from basic computer literacy to more advanced skills like navigating online job search platforms and using budgeting apps.
Getting online can feel daunting, but when woven into a service proven to support people to get a few extra quid in their pockets, it quickly feels less so. By improving digital literacy, Clean Slate empowers people to manage their finances more effectively. Clients learn how to access online banking, compare utility bills, or even set up direct debits, helping them to save money and avoid unnecessary fees. Learning how to use job search websites or LinkedIn enhances chances of securing employment, further contributing to financial stability.
- One-to-One Coaching
Clean Slate’s Support Workers (Quids In! Coaches) offer personalised, one-to-one support with both setting up and using digital devices both from our drop-in centres, and remotely via our Virtual Support Hub. This allows clients to ask questions in a comfortable environment and progress at their own pace, building their digital confidence over time.
A client recently approached the team at the Weston Hub in Bath (one of our drop-ins that’s part of Good Things Foundation’s National Digital Inclusion Network), for help setting up his new phone and mobile wifi hotspot device. Through several sessions, he was not only guided in using the hotspot device but also learned how to manage his phone’s storage, resolve app issues, and explore online banking and public transport apps. This personalised support empowered this individual to use his device confidently and make better financial decisions, ultimately improving his quality of life.
- Promoting Digital Confidence
At the heart of Clean Slate’s work is the mission to promote digital confidence. Many clients, like the client at the Weston Hub, come with anxieties about using technology. Clean Slate aims to lift these worries by providing ongoing support, gentle nudges and encouragement, ensuring that clients feel comfortable in their ability to navigate the digital world. Over time, this confidence allows individuals to independently access online services, whether it’s managing their money, applying for jobs, or simply staying informed.
- Community Engagement
Beyond direct support, Clean Slate engages with the broader community to raise awareness about digital inclusion. By partnering with local organisations and community groups, Clean Slate fosters a supportive environment where individuals can continue developing their digital skills. This collective effort helps to break down the barriers to digital inclusion, ensuring that no one is left behind in today’s increasingly digital world.
Clean Slate’s commitment to supporting people on low incomes with digital devices and skills is about much more than just technology. It’s about empowerment, financial independence, and creating opportunities for a better life. By providing access to devices and data, offering personalised support programmes, and promoting digital confidence, Clean Slate helps individuals build financial resilience, and become better equipped to thrive in a digital world. Whether it’s helping someone set up online banking or providing guidance on using apps for job searching, we ensure that everyone has the tools they need to be better off in today’s connected world.
