New publication for the over-65s promotes financial wellbeing in older age
In December, Quids in! magazine will launch a new special guide for the over-65s. Coinciding with recent government announcements, it will include support for those struggling with the withdrawal of the Winter Fuel Payment.
As always, the guide will be targeted at low-income households. Easy-read articles and simple-to-follow advice will support readers to take action to improve their financial wellbeing and resilience.
Editor Jeff Mitchell said: “Quids in! has always been responsive to the needs of low-income households. We were launched during the economic crash in 2008. Working with landlords, we proudly brought a tabloid-style publication to accessibly inform consumers of their options. In 2014, as Universal Credit rolled out, we launched a guide to help claimants navigate the system and its pitfalls. Now we’re adding our weight to the community support being mobilised in response to the government’s changes to Pension Credit.”
Content will include a feature on how to access Pension Credit the means-tested benefit that now acts as a gateway to the Winter Fuel Payment. Welfare analysts at Policy in Practice estimate more than 850,000 older people are missing out on an average £2,677.
Other articles will support older people with broader challenges to manage domestic budgets. Energy advice support householders to reduce bills while improving home life, for example, by reducing damp and mould. Information on accessing support from suppliers and grants for energy-efficient white goods will also appear.
Details of how to enjoy a comfortable retirement will accompany essential money tips. Other content will look at ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle, with articles on eating, staying active and reducing isolation.
As a response to the financial challenges faced by older people, the guide will also provide advice and signposting. Where people are struggling with meals, keeping warm or anxiety about rising bills, contact details of support organisations will be listed.
Publication of the first edition is in partnership with Bristol City Council, with support from the Household Support Fund. A bespoke edition for residents will include targeted content about the local support available, including help with Pension Credit applications. A generic edition will be available to other partners, with the opportunity to customise content in other locations.
