Rainy Day Money Magazine

Tenants and residents are often the least prepared for severe weather events and the least able to cover the costs when they strike. People on low incomes tell us they are worried about climate change, but don’t feel able to act until their day-to-day financial pressures are eased. That’s where we come in.

Clean Slate’s 16-page Quids in! Rainy Day Money Guide builds on the success of our London edition and is now available for national audiences.

Like everything we do at Quids in!, the guide takes a money-first approach, helping people deal with day-to-day financial pressures first, while keeping the advice relevant wherever people live.

The national edition is designed for landlords, local authorities and other organisations to order and distribute to their tenants and residents. It gives people the power to help themselves. It addresses ways to manage their home, their household budget and their wellbeing in the context of a changing climate, and offers ways to get actively involved in nature and the environment in their community.

What’s inside
  • Budgeting and building a buffer for a rainy day
  • Keeping energy costs down at home
  • Coping with extreme weather — heat, cold, damp and flooding
  • Healthy homes and wellbeing
  • Community action and getting involved locally

Throughout, the emphasis is on realistic, affordable steps that can help people feel more prepared and in control — climate action is presented not as another financial burden, but as a series of practical steps that save money and build resilience.

Built on the Rainy Day Money programme

The guide was developed from Clean Slate’s Rainy Day Money programme, part of our Quids in! Money Guidance service, which works with people on low incomes to improve their financial wellbeing and prepare for severe weather on a budget.

The programme is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and is one of ten projects brought together by the London Mental Health and Climate Coalition, led by Thrive LDN, to create local solutions that combine mental health and climate action.
